Undergraduate Admissions - Teacher Education

Educator Preparation

The College of Education manages admission to Educator Preparation for all education programs at Florida State University, including undergraduate education programs in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Music. Admission requirements vary by program and admission to Educator Preparation is separate and distinct from admission to upper-division or admission to the university as a transfer student. Admission to Educator Preparation is governed by state law and admission requirements may exceed general university admission requirements.

Combined BS/MS Pathways

The School of Teacher Education offers 5 state-approved Educator Preparation programs:

These programs are structured as Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Pathways. Students are admitted to the bachelor’s program with the understanding that they must also complete the Master’s program to be eligible for a Florida Professional Educator's Certificate. The BS degree requires two years of upper-division coursework (60 credit hours), and the MS degree requires one year of graduate-level coursework (30-36 credit hours). Twelve credit hours of graduate coursework are taken in the senior year of the BS program. These 12 credit hours are shared between the bachelor’s and Master’s programs.

Admissions Timeline

The BS/MS pathways utilize a cohort model with courses offered in a specific sequence over a three-year period. Students cannot progress through the BS/MS pathway at a faster or slower pace than specified by the program curriculum. Students are formally admitted to Educator Preparation in the Fall term regardless of the term they are admitted to the university and/or upper-division. We strongly encourage all prospective students (including transfer students) to plan their lower-division coursework so that they will be eligible for admission to the university and/or upper-division in the Fall term.

Students that apply and are admitted for the Spring term will be formally admitted to Educator Preparation the following Fall. They will join the next admitted Fall cohort and will follow that cohort’s curriculum map until graduation. Please note that this adds one additional term of enrollment to the student’s program of study. Spring admits will receive one-on-one advising to develop an appropriate course schedule for the spring term. Spring term coursework may include a mix of major courses, university-wide graduation requirements and/or content courses for English Education and Social Science Education majors. Priority will be given to completing university-wide graduation requirements and content course requirements.

Additional Requirements for Visual Disabilities Education

Due to resource constraints the program limits the number of students admitted each Fall and does not accept applications for the Spring term. Prospective students must complete both General Education and University-wide graduation requirements prior to admission.

University-wide Graduation Requirements
In addition to the General Education requirements, FSU requires that all undergraduate students satisfy a series of graduation requirements in specific subject areas. Although not required for admission to Educator Preparation, we strongly recommend that all prospective students (including transfer students) complete these university-wide graduation requirements as part of their lower-division or transfer coursework. These requirements must be satisfied with a C- or better prior to graduation.

Additional Information for Transfer Students

  • Transfer students must satisfy the university’s minimum requirements for admission including demonstration of satisfactory academic progress, college-level English and mathematics proficiency, and world language proficiency.
  • Associate of Science (AS) degrees and Associate of Arts (AA) degrees from private Florida colleges or non-Florida institutions do not automatically satisfy FSU’s General Education requirements. Transcripts from these institutions will be evaluated by the College of Education and the Division of Undergraduate Studies to determine if the General Education requirements have been satisfied. Admission to the College of Education may be denied if the prospective transfer student has not satisfied these requirements. For more information, please review the university’s Transfer Policy and Requirements website and PDF.
  • Transfer students must submit official transcripts for every high school and college attended to the Office of Admissions no later than the university application deadline. The transcripts should include final grades for the most recently completed semester. All in progress coursework must be listed in the Schedule of Remaining Coursework section of your transfer application.
