A team of FSU Sport Management faculty published a new manuscript titled "A Tale of Two Cities: COVID-19 and Student-Athletes' Emotional Well-Being using Natural Language Processing." The manuscript is published by Frontiers in Sports and Active Living and was written by Drs. Susmit Gulvani, James Du, Amy Chan Hyung Kim, and Jason Pappas, as well as doctoral candidate Carter Floyd.

Dr. Tim Baghurst, professor of education and director of FSU COACH, was interviewed for a news segment on WKYC in Cleveland, OH. In the segment, Baghurst talked about the historic moment of the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympic Games. In the conversation, he talks about the important questions that will be raised before and after the athlete, Laurel Hubbard from New Zealand, competes in the weightlifting event.

Drs. Tim Baghurst and Megan Buning, faculty members of the FSU Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching (FSU COACH), contributed to an article for CNN about resilience and achieving goals. The article is titled "6 ways to develop endurance and achieve your goals" and takes a look at the way that everyone—from Olympic athletes to the average person—can focus on achieving their goals better. Advice includes things like setting specific, meaningful goals, gaining support from those around you, and more.

Dr. Nicole Patton Terry, the Olive & Manuel Bordas Professor of Education in the School of Teacher Education, Director of the Florida Center for Reading Research, and Deputy Director of the Regional Education Lab, was elected Vice President of the Society for Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR). The SSSR was started in 1993 and is focused on promoting and encouraging the study of reading, as well as disseminating reading-related information.

Dr. Erik Hines, associate professor and coordinator of the Counselor Education Program and School Counseling track, served as a guest editor on a special issue of Teaching and Supervision in Counseling on anti-racist counselor education. The journal, which is the official journal of the Southeastern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, is intended to help further educate counselors on important matters in the field. Dr. Tim Baghurst, professor of education and director of the FSU Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching, was featured in an article on WalletHub about the Tokyo Olympics. The article "Tokyo Olympics By The Numbers 2021" offers insights into a number of important questions surrounding the Olympic Games, including the safety of the athletes in regards to the COVID-19 virus and how the pandemic will impact the overall tone of the games.

Dr. Megan M. Buning, teaching specialist in the FSU Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching, will be presenting at the International Society of Sport Psychology's World Congress, presenting her research titled, "The Effect of Mental Performance Training (via Instructional Rounds) on Umpires' Self-efficacy to Perform." The ISSP World Congress meets only once every four years and presents top research from sport psychology professionals around the world. This year's World Congress will convene September 30 - October 4, 2021.

Dr. Jason Pappas, teaching faculty in sport management, published a new book with his former student Vratik Sharma (Sport Management M.S. '15) titled Masters of the Game. The book has been in development over the last three years.

Dr. Sonia Cabell, assistant professor of reading education and language arts in the School of Teacher Education and the Florida Center for Reading Research, received the Diane Lapp & James Flood Professional Collaborator Award from the International Literacy Association. The award is given to two or more people who engage in collaboration and regularly contribute to the field. Cabell received the award with her collaborator Dr. Tricia Zucker, who is an associate professor in the Children's Learning Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Cabell also will be presenting at the American Reading Company webinar series. She will be presenting on how to support early literacy. The talk takes place online on Thursday, August 26, at 4:00 PM EST.

Dr. Jenny Root, assistant professor of special education, published an article with co-author Dr. Sarah Cox (PhD Special Education '19) and two former Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) students, Kiersten Goetz and Kaley Taylor, titled "Modified Schema-based Instruction to Encourage Mathematical Practice Use for a Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder" in the journal Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Root also published an article titled "Using Task Analysis to Support Inclusion and Assessment in the Classroom" in the journal TEACHING Exceptional Children. The article was written with doctoral students Addie McConomy and Taryn Wade.
