The purpose of the Academy of Scholars program is to draw upon the expertise of selected faculty to enhance the overall research profile of the College. For 2023-2024, five outstanding Academy of Scholars members were chosen based on their record of research productivity and the type of research support they will provide to their colleagues. The 2023-2024 Academy of Scholars Members are:
- Jenny Root (STE)
- Lyndsay Jenkins (EPLS)
- Ian Whitacre (STE)
- Thomas Ledermann (HDFS)
- Qinchun Rao (NIP)

Date and Time: September 15, 2023; 12:00-1:30pm
Location: Mission San Luis
Activity Leader(s): All AoS Members and OoR Support Team
Description: The Academy of Scholars would like to invite all research faculty members from across the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (name pending final approval) to an informal luncheon to kick off the new year and to engage in discussions with colleagues, old and new, about research trends and topics that span the breadth of the expanded College. Attendees will get a chance to chat with colleagues from across the College’s six academic departments and informally discuss and explore common research interests, ideate on possible research collaborations, and explore seed and catalyst funding opportunities to support new intra-College research initiatives.
Date and Time: October 6, 12:00-1:00 pm
Location: Zoom
Activity Leader(s): Jim Whyte, Josh Newman, Jenny Root
Date and Time:
- Session 1: 2:00-2:45pm, Friday, Nov 3, 2023
- Session 2: 3:00-3:45pm, Friday, Nov 3, 2023

Description: Three independent program elements are offered on power analysis.
Session 1: Power analysis using G*Power (Tom & Yanli) – November 3
- A brief introduction to power analysis and the key concepts will be given. We will then demonstrate how sample sizes can be determined for regression models as well as univariate and repeated measures ANOVA using the free software G*Power.
Session 2: Introduction to multilevel randomized trials and statistical power (Yanli & Tom) – November 3
- We will discuss experimental designs. Specifically, we will discuss how to design adequately powered cluster and multisite randomized trials to detect treatment effects. Our topics include identifying multilevel randomized trials, understanding key components for conducting a power analysis to detect main and interaction effects, and using online software to conduct power analyses.
Session 3: Power simulation for the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model and cross-lagged models (Tom) – November 17
- A brief introduction is given to Monte Carlo simulation for running power simulations. We demonstrate how power can be estimated and how sample sizes can be determined for the mediation Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) and cross-lagged models using R. The solution we present asks for the correlations among the variables and allows the specification of skewness and kurtosis.
Date and Time: March 7, 4 PM
Location: Zoom (the Zoom link will be provided via the RSVP confirmation email)
Activity Leader(s): Jenny Root
Description: In this session, Academy of Scholars members who have been or currently are editors or AEs will share their experiences, discuss how they came into the role, outline the challenges and the benefits of editorial work, and offer tips for early career scholars who might begin positioning themselves for a similar role in the future. Presenters will also be available for one-on-one consultation and advisory meetings should anyone in the College wish to learn more about editing journals.
Date and Time: March 21, 4 PM
Location: Zoom (the Zoom link will be provided via the RSVP confirmation email)
Activity Leader(s): Lyndsay Jenkins

Description: Interested in intervention research but not sure where to get started? After returning from a two-week IES training on randomized trials, Lyndsay is excited to share lots of information and resources to assist you in learning more about intervention research! Online resources, funding options, and free tools will all be shared in this interactive workshop.
Date and Time: April 12, 2 PM
Location: Zoom (the Zoom link will be provided via the RSVP confirmation email)
Activity Leader(s): Qinchun Rao, Yanli Xie

Description: This workshop is focused on how to prepare high-quality quantitative journal articles. It can help you improve the quality of your own work, your students' work, or improve your ability to serve as an associate editor or reviewer for peer-reviewed journals. Each section of the journal article will be examined (Intro, Method, Results, Discussion) in detail.
Date and Time: Ongoing support throughout the year
Activity Leader(s): Ian Whitacre, Lyndsay Jenkins, Thomas Ledermann, Qinchun Rao
Description: Academy of Scholars members will provide pre-submission feedback for COE faculty seeking to prepare high-quality journal articles. They will review manuscripts and grant applications.
Date and Time: Ongoing support throughout the year
Activity Leader(s): Ian Whitacre, Qinchun Rao, Lyndsay Jenkins
Description: Drs. Whitacre, Rao, and Jenkins will provide consultation for early-career research faculty who are looking to establish line(s) of research, develop strategies for pursuing funding, and create systems for managing multiple studies and manuscripts. The goal of these sessions is to help individual faculty members get more organized and deliberate in terms of the work they prioritize and how they get it done.
