Student Spotlight: Alexis Wilson

This fall, we are celebrating some of our outstanding students who are graduating this semester. We wish all of our graduating students the best as they begin the next chapter of their journeys.

Alexis WilsonName: Alexis Wilson

Hometown: Milton, Florida

Program: Elementary Education (B.S./M.S.)

Why did you choose your program?

I chose this program for its combined degree path as it would allow me to achieve a quality level of higher education that would prove beneficial in the long run. The student-focused approach to learning and the opportunity to form connections within and outside the classroom also stood out. This promised smaller class sizes and direct interactions with students, faculty, and the community, which was important in my journey to become an educator. The program has held true to these promises as my professional network has grown significantly and prepared me for the future.

What's your favorite part of your program?

My favorite part of the Elementary Education program is the partnerships within the small cohort sizes and the opportunities for various field experiences. An instant bond was created among the members of my cohort. As a group, we support one another and share experiences or recommendations that make us better educators. The various field experiences have also furthered this growth journey outside the classroom. Though I feel that the time in each placement was never enough, seeing the light shine in my students' eyes when they tried and succeeded warms my soul and has amplified my "why" of teaching. As each day passes, I know that I am in the right place.

What do you want to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I want to continue my work in elementary classrooms. I currently teach second grade in Leon County, and I plan to continue in this role for many more years. Eventually, I envision myself moving back home to shape the minds of the new generations as they learn and grow. I want to thank the professors and cooperating teachers for getting me to where I am today and helping me shape my journey into something I love.
