Dr. Sabrina Johnson, PhD, Teaching Faculty I in the CACREP-accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling program in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems, joined Florida State University in 2023. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and Bachelor of Arts in Experimental Psychology from the University of South Carolina. She also received an Educational Specialist in Counselor Education with a concentration in Marriage, Couples & Family Counseling and PhD in Counselor Education from the CACREP-accredited Counselor Education programs at the University of South Carolina.

An active member of the counseling profession, Dr. Johnson is a licensed professional counselor in South Carolina and Georgia, and a national certified counselor. She has over 5 years of clinical experience, ranging from an integrated college healthcare setting, serving as both a clinician and case manager for an Eating Disorder Consultation team; as well as in a private practice setting providing mental health services primarily to Black women and Women of Color navigating various concerns. She also has experience providing individual, couples counseling, and group counseling as well.

Dr. Johnson has experience teaching several courses including Psychosocial & Multicultural Aspects of Counseling, Family Counseling, Human Sexuality, Communication Skills in Counseling, and more. Since teaching, she has earned the Thank A Teacher Certificate of Appreciation from USC’s Center for Teaching Excellence in 2023.

Her research interests focus on multiculturalism and multicultural training practices in counseling, and the cultural humility development and training of mental health providers. Her scholarly work includes a published book chapter in Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy (2022), as well as a peer-reviewed article (in press) in Journal of Creativity in Mental Health. She has over 20 presentations on a local, regional, and national level presenting on issues ranging from eating disorders to cultural humility. As a doctoral student she was the recipient of the ACES Graduate Student Research Grant, and she also earned the McClam Endowed Fellowship and ACES Diversity Conference Scholarship.

 

Lastly, Dr. Johnson has engaged in service in the counseling profession and community in various ways. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, Association of Counselor Education & Supervision and Southern Association of Counselor Education & Supervision. She has served as a state division taskforce member for ACES, volunteer for SACES and ACES, a proposal reviewer for SACES, and she was the former secretary for the Upsilon Sigma Chi Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota. She is also on the Steering Committee and Development of Strategic Planning and Action Committee of the Martha Dendy Community Center, Inc. nonprofit organization.
