Dr. James D. Klein is the Walter Dick Distinguished Professor of Instructional Systems Design at Florida State University and Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University. He also serves as the Department Chair for the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at FSU. His scholarship focuses on three main areas: instructional design, performance improvement, and active learning strategies. He has authored over sixty refereed journal articles, three books, eleven chapters and numerous conference papers, winning several awards for his scholarship.

Much of Dr. Klein’s research is directly related to his teaching. For example, his scholarship on performance improvement (PI) is an outgrowth of a graduate class that he teaches. Prior to developing the course, he conducted a needs assessment to determine the performance improvement competencies for instructional technologist and completed a content analysis of the empirical literature on PI. Implementation of the course has led to studies on electronic performance support systems and on cross-cultural performance interventions. All of these efforts have resulted in publications in Performance Improvement Quarterly.

In his position as Professor at FSU, Dr. Klein typically teaches courses such as Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology, Research Practicum in Learning and Instructional Systems, and Performance System Analysis. He has been recognized as an outstanding alumnus of the Instructional Systems program at FSU and for his service to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. He was identified as the third most productive author in Educational Technology, Research & Development from 1989-2008.

He has served in a number of leadership positions including Development Editor of Educational Technology Research & Development and as a fellow of the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction.

His book, Design and Development Research: Methods, Strategies and Issues has been well received, winning both the 2008 Outstanding book in the Field of Instructional Design and the 2009 James W. Brown Publication Award from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. His book Instructor Competencies: Standards for Face-to-Face, Online and Blended Settings won the 2005 Outstanding Book in the Field of Instructional Design.
