Christopher R. LaFever (he | him), PhD, LPCC-S (KY), LCADC (KY), NCC is the Career Counseling Program Coordinator and an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Counselor Education Programs at Florida State University. When Dr. LaFever graduated with a M.S. degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling he worked full time in a community mental health center in a variety of roles (outpatient, residential, crisis evaluation, school-based mental health counseling, & primary care integration) with a variety of different presenting issues. Dr. LaFever went on to be a professional counselor in a college career setting as well as an elementary school during his time in his doctoral program. Dr. LaFever works to embed his variety of experiences into the classroom in a manner that supports the understanding of the aspiring counselors he works with.

Dr. LaFever has been an active member and leader in a variety of professional associations. He was selected to be a Chi Sigma Iota honor society Leadership Fellow and Intern in 2021. He remains active with Chi Sigma Iota currently serving on their Chapter Development Committee. He is a member of the National Career Development Association where he serves as the editor for the “Ethics in a Nutshell” section of the Career Development Magazine. He is also an active member of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision where he serves on the Counseling Advisory Committee.

Dr. LaFever’s research interests revolve around wellness, counselor development, career, posttraumatic growth, clinical supervision, and resilience. He has presented on these topics and been published in peer-reviewed journals on several of the topics as well. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Counselor Leadership and Advocacy.

Dr. LaFever has taught a variety of courses in counseling with and strives to support aspiring counselors’ critical reflection process as they integrate new knowledge and skills. Dr. LaFever is passionate about the education and development of counselors because he has seen and continues to see the impact that quality counseling can have on people’s lives.
